New Ken Burns-produced documentary offers historical look at cancer, “The Emperor of All Maladies”; KET’s companion call-in show answers viewers’ cancer questions

For Release: 03/09/15 2:01 PM

KET’s live call-in program, Health 360: Answers for Cancer, will address viewers’ questions about cancer treatment and screening options in Kentucky

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name by author Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD, the new three-part PBS series Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies strives to deliver a comprehensive history of the disease – from its first description in an ancient Egyptian scroll to the halls of today’s most modern research institutions, where scientists work to perfect treatments for the disease. The series airs Monday, March 30 through Wednesday, April 1 at 9/8 pm on KET.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Barak Goodman and executive produced by Ken Burns, the film shares intimate stories of cancer patients and documents the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have, at last, brought researchers within sight of developing lasting cancer cures.

In conjunction with the national broadcast of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies, KET’s live call-in Health 360: Answers for Cancer will offer viewers a chance to ask questions about cancer screening, treatment and recovery resources in Kentucky. The program airs Wednesday, April 1 at 8/7 pm on KET.

Hosted by Renee Shaw, the live program will include a panel of cancer experts prepared to answer viewers’ questions. Scheduled panelists include Donald Miller, MD/PhD, director of the KentuckyOne Health James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville; Patrick Williams, MD, medical director at Norton Cancer Institute; Timothy Mullet, MD, lung cancer specialist with University of Kentucky HealthCare, who is himself a cancer survivor; and Fran Feltner, DNP, director of the University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health.

Viewers can submit questions to KET via Twitter at @HealthKET, by email at healthnews@ket.org, or by phone at 800-753-6237.

A pre-taped segment for the Health 360: Answers for Cancer program will spotlight cancer screening outreach efforts in Kentucky targeting high risk populations. Led by Wayne Tuckson, MD, familiar to KET viewers as host of Kentucky Health, the segment features Whitney Jones, MD, gastroenterologist and founder of the Colon Cancer Prevention Project, based in Louisville; and Connie White, MD, deputy commissioner for clinical affairs for the Kentucky Department for Public Health.

Additionally, airing the day before the premiere of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies, Dr. Mark Evers, director of the UK Markey Cancer Center, joins host Bill Goodman to discuss the latest news in cancer care and research on a new One to One. The program airs Sunday, March 29 at 1 pm/noon on KET and Tuesday, March 31 at 7:30/6:30 pm on KET2.

Health 360: Answers for Cancer is a KET production, produced and directed by Laura Krueger. One to One with Bill Goodman is a KET production, produced by Bill Goodman.
