The next episode of Kentucky Life spotlights Kentucky State University’s Aquaculture program, introduces viewers to Versailles dog trainer Kim Littlefield, and profiles NASA educator Sue Darnell Ellis and “The Seafood Lady” Nichelle Thurston of Louisville. The episode airs Saturday, Nov. 4 at 8/7 pm and Sunday, Nov. 5 at 4/3 pm on KET and Monday, Nov. 6 at 7/6 pm on KET2.

First, Kentucky Life visits Kentucky State University, where the Division of Aquaculture is a leader in its field, providing critical information to Kentucky’s commercial fish farmers and aiding aquaculture efforts internationally. Dr. Jim Tidwell, KSU Aquaculture chair, offers an overview of the program and its mission, while viewers get a behind-the-scenes look at the university’s faculty and student aquaculture research.

Then, host Doug Flynn introduces viewers to Kim Littlefield of Littlefield Dog Training, based in Versailles. Littlefield has been working with dogs for more than 40 years, tracing her lifelong interest in training to watching her father train his own dog when she was a young girl. Over the years, Kim’s interests have evolved from competitive obedience to field training to agility. Throughout each of these pursuits, though, she has held onto the firm belief that obedience is the foundation of any strong relationship between dog and handler.

Next, the program spotlights former teacher and NASA director Sue Darnell Ellis, a graduate of Murray State University who enjoyed a nearly 25-year career as coordinator for NASA’s Aerospace Education Services Program, a role that allowed her to support curriculum development and aerospace education for thousands of classrooms across the country. Ellis explains how a small-town Kentucky girl ended up with a national platform to promote STEM education, while emphasizing the importance of following her dreams.

Finally, Kentucky Life travels to Louisville to meet Nichelle Thurston, better known to locals as “The Seafood Lady.” Just a little more than two years ago, Thurston began selling Florida-style seafood from her home. She added a food truck and later set up shop in a former tire store, which was featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins & Dives. The national notoriety and popularity of Thurston’s signature dishes – including snow crab and jumbo shrimp, as well as The Hulk, a housemade waffle topped with seafood – recently allowed Thurston to establish her new restaurant location on Louisville’s Oak Street, where the Kentucky Life crew captures her at work.
