For Release: 11/21/19 2:18 PM
The next episode of KET’s Kentucky Life spotlights the Shelby Society, the state’s history of armed duels, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, and a reading of the holiday classic The Night Before Christmas. The episode airs Saturday, Nov. 23, at 8/7 pm and Sunday, Nov. 24, at 4/3 pm on KET, and Monday, Nov. 25, at 7/6 pm on KET2.
First, Kentucky Life stops in at the Shelby Society, the first organization of its kind in the United States, created for descendants of Kentucky’s governors. The organization—named for Kentucky’s first governor Isaac Shelby—works to enhance the quality of life in Commonwealth by supporting educational projects and other charitable causes.
Then, travel back in time with the Kentucky Historical Society to when some in Kentucky’s upper class—including several state lawmakers—solved their differences by fighting armed duels. Dozens of these “affairs of honor,” as they were known, were fought from 1790 to 1866, killing and wounding a number of participants.
Next, Kentucky Life pays a visit to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, who have been on the front lines of various social causes since the order’s founding in 1812.
Finally, Kentucky Life reaches into the archives to join former host Byron Crawford as he does a fireside reading of the holiday classic The Night Before Christmas. So grab a comfy seat by the hearth.
Kentucky Life is a KET production, produced by Brandon Wickey. Segment producers for this episode are Brandon Wickey, Gary Pahler, and Valerie Trimble.
This year is Kentucky Life’s 25th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, the program will include special Memory segments, in which each of Kentucky Life’s hosts—Byron Crawford, Dave Shuffett and Doug Flynn—will revisit some of their favorite stories over the years.
