Documentary tells story of first black football players at University of Kentucky

For Release: 04/13/20 3:32 PM

In the fall of 1967, Nate Northington walked onto the University of Kentucky football field and became the first black athlete to play football in the Southeastern Conference.

Black in Blue is a feature-length documentary that tells the tragic, triumphant story behind that fateful day. It’s the story of four black football players who endured racism and hardship in their quest to realize their dream: to play alongside white athletes at their university and to open the door to the SEC for tens of thousands of black athletes who’d follow in their footsteps.

Black in Blue airs Monday, April 20, at 9/8 pm on KET and Monday, April 27, at 8/7 pm on KET2.

Black in Blue is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Paul Wagner and executive produced by former UK quarterback Paul Karem.

KET is Kentucky’s largest classroom, where learning comes to life for more than one million people each week via television, online and mobile. Learn more about Kentucky’s preeminent public media organization at KET.org, on Twitter @KET and at facebook.com/KET.
